SR. MANAGER, PROJECT MANAGEMENT (R&D focus)

An excellent opportunity exists for a talented Sr. Manager, Project Management. The ideal candidate will have a strong Pharmaceutical business as well as some Scientific Project Management experience.  R&D and Scheduling experience is required. A PMP would be a plus.


The Sr. Manager will be able to run one or more development programs including at least one late stage development program (or equivalent). Essential duties here are running Project Team Meetings, oversight of timelines, budget, weekly communications, risk management and junior staff development.


Duties and Responsibilities:
The Sr. Manager will independently carry out the activities below and will become involved with more complex issues and problems solving as well as to mentor one or more junior level staff for Project Management roles and responsibilities within a team structure. Efforts will be required on a Program level work, Special Projects and on Project Management Office (PMO) foundational activities.


• The Sr. Manager will oversee at least one late stage (Ph2 and beyond or equivalent) program.
• The Sr. Manager, Project Management will run periodic Project Team meetings, depending on the stage of development, these could be bi-weekly or once a month. Standard expectations for agenda creation, document preparation to run a successful meeting and draft/final minutes are required.
• Ad-hoc meetings may need to be set up to look at program strategy, mitigate issues and/or project risks, review budgets, assess timelines strategically and tactfully; these could be scheduled as infrequently as once per week up to several times per week depending on the situation and context of the issue and stage of development.
• General Project Management administrative duties such as timeline updating, budget updating, and reporting is expected weekly while other Project Management activities such as the Monthly Project Review and the Stage Gate Meetings happen less frequently, monthly and 1-2 x/year respectively.
• Various reports may be required including weekly reports, dashboard reports, timeline reports, budget reports, risk management reports. Most of these reports should be created/updated weekly with the exception of the budget report which may be monthly and could increase in frequency at the end of the business cycle which is currently November of each year. Documentation format will be consistent with what the company's practices.
• Supervisory duties for a Sr. Manager level position include managing up to 2 junior level reports. The supervisor role will be one of mentoring, leading by example, direct training and/or cross training activities. The role could include hiring, yearly reviews, promotion as well as firing of staff.
• Managers involvement in special projects may range since the company is an evolving and growing company. or instance, if task forces are set up to solve a particular problem and/or to create or modify a particular work stream, Sr. Managers as well as cross-functional colleagues could participate depending on the context. Responsibilities could include being a team member to provide functional input or possibly even to facilitate the meeting, using standard PM practices.
• Across all activities, the Sr. Manager is expected to double check the work of the team to mitigate risks and errors that might lead to delays. Depending on the context, detailed review of data and/or calculations might be appropriate.
• Presentations could vary across programs and could be required with any of the items above so the Sr. Manager must be comfortable presenting in front of a group of colleagues, team members and or Sr. Managers.
• The Sr. Manager is expected to follow and support corporate and local policies/practices across teams and to adjust as they evolve in the company.

Desired Skills & Experience

Education Preferred:
Bachelor Level Education with 15 years of experience or Master Level Education with 10 years of industry experience. Science related undergraduate degree, science or business master level degree.

Formal Project Management Training/Certification e.g. PMP would be a plus.
